Emerging Artist: Roberto Lugo

The conference came to a close with talks by the NCECA Emerging Artists, Class of 2015. All were noteworthy but this speech by Roberto Lugo is one of the most memorable I’ve seen. It came as no suprise that it ended with a rousing standing ovation with few dry eyes in the room. I remain at a loss of words to fully discuss my response to this speech. I appreciate that every piece has such sincere intent behind it. His work may be “pretty” but that has a purpose – to pull the viewer in. He threads in references to objects that have definite associations. He incorporates objects into his installation that show great care to the viewer experience.
